Partners in Education

First Nations Initiatives supports and encourages partnerships with the goal of building productive relationships and enhancing First Nations perspectives in Yukon Schools. This ranges from support with Yukon First Nations history, to curriculum development with a passion for inclusion of First Nations aspects in all subject areas.

Our Partners

Yukon First Nations Education Directors
(click for contact information)
Each First Nation has an Education representative to ensure all Yukon First Nations are included in the process.

Yukon First Nations Curriculum Working Group (YFN CWG) (click for more information)
The YFN CWG, which was established in 2005, has a representative from each of the eight Yukon First Nations language groups. This committee reviews curriculum materials and resources to ensure that they reflect Yukon First Nations cultures, histories and perspectives.

Community Education Liaison Coordinators; Education Support Workers or Employment & Training Officers
(CELCs; ESWs or ETOs)
(click for contact information)
CELCs; ESWs or ETOs are often a teacher's first contact with the First Nations community. As employees of their respective First Nations, they are an integral part of the school community and provide a link between the school and the community.

Yukon First Nations Governments
(click for contact information)
FNI works with individual First Nations to determine how they prefer to work with us to develop school programs. Formal education agreements have been signed between the Yukon government and some individual First Nations. These agreements have resulted in the development of curriculum and programs in the traditional territories of those First Nations.

First Nations Education Commission (FNEC) (click for contact information)
The FNEC was re-established in April of 2013 by resolution from the YFN Leadership. FNEC provides technical support, advice and recommendations to Yukon First Nations that are members of FNEC with respect to education matters relating to Yukon First Nation citizens and communities. These education matters include early childhood education, primary and secondary education and employment training.

Yukon First Nation Education Directorate (YFNED)
(click to go to their website)                                                                                              Steered by the Chiefs Committee on Education (CCOE), the Yukon First Nation Education Directorate was launched in the summer of 2020 in response to the long overdue need for unified control over First Nation education in the territory. YFNED is dedicated to capacity-building, systems and resources development, second-level educational programs and services enhancement, and learner supports.

Yukon Native Language Centre (YNLC) (click to go to their website)
The Yukon Native Language Centre is administered by the Council of Yukon First Nations with funds provided by the Government of Yukon. It is a training and research facility providing a wide range of linguistic and educational services to Yukon First Nations and to the general public.
